Company history

In 1970 Wilfried Micke faced a difficult decision. Player in the championship team PSV Borussia Düsseldorf - working as a chemical laboratory assistant for DAB (Dortmunder Aktienbrauerei) - part-time salesman of TT special articles from his home in Dortmund. How should it continue? The entrepreneurial spirit triumphed and Wilfried Micke founded the then one-man company "sport-micke" on 01.04.1970.

The team mates Eberhard Schöler (runner-up world champion 1969) and Wilfried Lieck (Micke's double partner at PSV Borussia Düsseldorf) came to the opening.

The most important business idea was the assembly of custom-made rackets - at that time still something extraordinary and special. No later than 24 hours after receipt of the order, the fully assembled racket was sent by mail. The then available products were presented on 24 pages in the first sport-micke catalogue in 1970.

The small company developed in the upswing of the German table tennis sport.

In 1977 "sport-micke" merged with "schöler-tischtennis" to the new company "Schöler&Micke Sportartikel-Vertriebs-Ges.mbH". In April 1977 the company moved to new premises with shop and offices in the Märkische Straße in Dortmund (only 200m from the old, smaller company in the Landgrafenstraße). At this time the company already employed 12 people - almost all of them passionate table tennis players themselves.

In the following years the first Schöler&Micke TT-Shops were established in Germany. It was almost a matter of course that in 1979 one of these first TT-Shops was opened in Düsseldorf, the home of PSV Borussia. Co-owner was Ralf Wosik, who managed the flourishing business with his later wife Gudrun. Ralf Wosik and Wilfried Micke knew each other from their time as teammates at PSV Borussia Düsseldorf from 1975 to 1977. As a trained sports goods merchant with the experience from the Düsseldorf shop, Ralf Wosik became an employee of Schöler&Micke in Dortmund in 1987. At the 1989 World Championships in Dortmund, Wosik ended his international career as a table tennis professional after 102 international matches and several German championships and European Cup victories. Already in 1987 Ralf Wosik became managing director and co-owner of Schöler&Micke in Dortmund alongside Wilfried Micke.

In 2007 a dream came true for Micke and Wosik with the move to the new building at Alte Straße in Dortmund-Körne - an individually planned location with a huge warehouse, modern logistics, large office space and the 200 sqm flagship store. The Schöler&Micke catalogues with a large selection of the most important products and brands became more and more extensive and informative over the years. Meanwhile the annual catalogue, which is called the "bible of table tennis" by some, is over 200 pages thick. The Schöler&Micke online shop has been on the net since 2001 - this enables shopping around the clock. The Schöler&Micke partner shop network includes more than 40 local specialist dealers throughout Germany. Today more than 35 employees work for Schöler&Micke in Dortmund, many of them active or former table tennis players of all classes. The customer benefits from the versatile distribution network: whether mail order catalogue, local dealer or online shop - "the world of table tennis" is represented everywhere.

Company founder Wilfried Micke died in October 2018 after a long illness in his hometown Dortmund. Everyone who knew him will miss his passion for our table tennis sport, his open-mindedness towards new things and his tireless commitment to his company and its employees.
